Bongiorno's Italian Restaurant

Bongiorno's Italian Restaurant, located downtown Albany "Its only location", for the past thirty years offers residents and visitors alike, great food, carefully and individually prepared by the owners, Rosanna and Felix, and great service with a staff that really loves to make your dining experience really enjoyable.

We have a great customer base. Many have had dinner at Bongiorno's for as many years since we have been open. We provide home cooked food, that tastes of old Italy. We were brought up by Calabrese and Sicilian parents that know how to flavor food with a mediteranian flare. We use fresh ingredients, extra virgin olive oil, farm grown vegetables that when the weather allows, we pick it ourselves.

New York Times "Power Lunches At Bongiorno's with or without reservations and your host Rosanna & Felix will make your dining experience unforgettable.

Wonderful, friendly restaurant. The staff are all very kind and accommodating. The food is delicious and the prices are reasonable. Some of the best meatballs around! Definitely a great place to go - good for a date too!

Listed in Last month in the ALB, the must haves.
have been here some 2 dozen times. All the veal dishes are great. parm saltambuca, limone, have tried em all they are top notch. Pasta on the side for free which is always a good thing. One of the best things is there pesto oil bread dip they give you. Gf usually gets the lasanga and always loves it, huge piece too. Portions are always good sized. Salads come with your meal and are always fresh. buffalo motzerella with tomato and balsamic is top notch. Cant go wrong here, outside seating.

Loved this restaurant. My family just happened to be driving through Albany and found it on Yelp:) The food was excellent. Lots of sauce in the dishes which my family loves! They are well known for their veal dishes, but the lemon chicken dish was great. I had a pasta special with shrimp cooked to perfection. Wine was good. The tirimisu was awesome! Service was great. The owner and chef is a very fun Italian lady who came out and talked to my family, told stories and we had lots of laughs. It was a blast!

"Great Little Place"
5 of 5 starsReviewed November 8, 2013 via mobile
As an airline pilot (nearly 20 years). I'm always looking for places where I can get something other than he usual hotel food. ie. chicken wings and quesadillas. Bongiornos is a short walk up State street from the Hilton hotel. I went there for lunch based on the recommendation of one of our Flight Attendants. Since I was by myself, I opted to eat at the bar. It definitely has the feel of a little neighborhood restaurant. The staff and Felix, the owner, treat you as if you've been coming there for twenty years. The food is very good. Veal was tender enough to cut with a fork. If you get the chance to eat here, be sure to order a "Bongiorno". It's a drink that Felix invented. It comes in a shot glass and is layered red, white and green. Apparently the makeup of the green part is a secret. I'll be eating there every time I'm in Albany.

"Personal Service"
5 of 5 starsReviewed August 6, 2013
I visited Bongiorno's with my 16 year old daughter late, after a day of traveling. They seated us quickly. It looked as though most of the tables had recently left, and only a few diners were still in the dining area. Our waiter described menu items when we needed clarification and he served our food timely. Meanwhile the empty tables were all cleared and set up for the next days business without disturbing us a bit. I appreciated that - sometimes the staff gets loud and less careful when most guests have gone, but this staff was quick and quiet.

Our food was very good. I loved the delicate flavor and texture of my fish special.

The food here is excellent! Their sauce is great! We came here for lunch 4 times in two weeks and everything was great! The chicken Parmesan was excellent! Also the chefs salad with ham and provolone was great too! The decor is a little ugly but the food is great! I highly recommend this place!

"Good Italian with a super nice host"
5 of 5 starsReviewed February 15, 2013
Ok, so yes the area is less than perfect BUT not any place I would ever be scared to go to at night and I am a woman. It is small in there and looks like an older house but my husband loved his chicken parm and I loved my Fettucine Al Cognac I believe it was called. Salads were also good. We were able to park right in front. The best part was how quickly they accomodated us on Valentine's Day as we were too busy to plan ahead so we made last minute reservations.

"Excellent Food!"
5 of 5 starsReviewed October 10, 2012
The food at Bongiorno's Restaurant is authentic and delicious. My meal started with warm bread and home-made pesto for dipping, as well as a salad with thick slices of fresh garden tomatoes. Yum! For the main course, I had an Eggplant Parmesan that was fresh and incredible.

The restaurant feels homey, not least of all because it comprises the first floor of a converted house. I think I was eating in what was once the living room. The staff goes out of their way to be accommodating and make you feel comfortable, and at one point, the chef made her way through the restaurant, checking in on the customers' meals.

The restaurant is a block off of Washington Avenue on Dove Street, making it easily accessible. I walked up the hill from the Hotel Albany which is only about half a mile away. It made a pleasant walk to and from my meal on a late summer evening.

I've only been to this restaurant once, but I'm looking forward to going back again.

Bongiorno's is a fabulous place and the wait staff is well trained, friendly and accommodating. I am a patron of many years and never had a bad meal. Classic Italian made by people who were born in Italy. They know cooking. The menu selections are voluminous and in the $13-$25 range. Have a carafe of Chianti as an added nice touch to your meal. Felix and Rosanna are wonderful hard working people and they certainly have given the Capital District a gift.

"Incredible! A Real Italian restaurant abroad!!!"
5 of 5 starsReviewed August 6, 2012
Excellent REAL italian cuisine, a service fast, precise, well organized, an owner who comes to greet you as I remember was done in Italy more than 30 years ago... But overall a tasteful and perfectly cooked pasta with incredibly fresh fish, mozzarelle, tomators, salad seasoned with real extra virgin Olive oil.... An to crown all that a final check at very acceptable levels! This a place is a must, for whom is in the nearby of Albany!,

"Tough to top this experience"
5 of 5 starsReviewed June 4, 2012
Up from NYC for the weekend to do some hiking and exploring near Windham....decided to roll into Albany for dinner. Very charming from the outside - and very "intimate" on the inside. Not a ton of tables so it feels like you are in a home vs. a restaurant.

Server as very helpful - ordered some eggplant parm that wasn't on the menu. Pinot Noir was very smooth.....eggplant parm was delicious, and the shrimp fra diavlo was the perfect mix of spice and flavor.

To top it all off the owner, I presume, came over and asked us about our meal and if we were local. We said we loved the food and were visiting from the city....he tells us to sit down and he has something for us. He comes back with this homemade shot that looks like an italian flag and gives one to my girlfriend and I as a thank you. Wow.

We are visiting and may never be back in Albany so he could have just let us walk out after the meal BUT he went out of his way to treat us as a local / regular customer and that is so rare these days. We WILL come back!

  "Great Food and Great People"
5 of 5 starsReviewed March 5, 2012
This restaurant has that homey feeling like you're eating with a bunch of friends. The food is great, the portioning is generous and the owners often come around to see how things are going. Consider Bongiorno's if you're going to an event at the Armory since it's right around the corner! But either way it's worth the trip!

"It's the best traditional small family owed taste of Italia in Albany".
5 of 5 starsReviewed October 5, 2011
It' the best family owned small traditional taste of Italia in the Capital Region. The little touches like fresh sweet basil pesto, candles, fresh linen tableclothes and romantic atmosphere make the difference. We've made a habit of dining here on special occasions for several years and have found the quality to be consistently high for both the food cuisine and service.

  "Great Food - Great Prices"
5 of 5 starsReviewed November 3, 2010
The service was excellent - attentive without being overbearing. We loved the food. The Veal Marsala and Veal Saltimbouca were done to perfection. A salad and side of pasta were included. The pesto dipping sauce for the bread was great. The restaurant is in a renovated house - intimate with soft lighting. When we are in the Albany area again we would return to Bongiorno's Restaurant.

  "Albany's Gem"
5 of 5 starsReviewed September 3, 2008
This is the best Italian restaurant hands down in Albany. I've been there a dozen times and have yet to find a single complaint. It's very rare you go to a restaurant and feel like you're at home, not to mention a family member comes to every table to see how your dinner was. If you want excellent Italian food (which has been cooked by the same little old lady for the last decade +) and fantatsic canoli's go to Bongiorno's.

  "Absolutely Fantastic"
5 of 5 starsReviewed March 2, 2007
I have walked past Bongiorno's for years and never gave it much thought. My friend suggested we go a few months ago so I went without much expectation. I was amazed to find the service was warm and personal, the food was incredible and the ambiance was simple and inviting. This is a family-owned restaurant and I know this because the owners came out to our table to find out how everything was. The second time was even better with the chef going above and beyond to provide me with exactly what I wanted even though it wasn't on the menu. I will go back whenever I can now. The prices aren't cheap but they aren't outrageous, either. It is well worth it to go someplace where they actually want you to have the best experience possible and do whatever they need to to make that happen. I only wish I had known about it sooner!

Comments: By far the best Italian restaurant my husband and I have eaten at. The chicken parm was simply amazing and the pasta was done very well with a great sauce. The owner (I believe it was the owner) came around to all of the tables to see how we liked the food, and was just very charming himself. The place isn't fancy at all, very casual, but don't let that deter you. We had to park a block away, but again - worth it. Dinner for two, including drinks, came to about $75.

Comments: we ate at Bongiorno's on new years eve. It was very busy that night as is any other resturant in the capital district. The wait for a table was well spent with conversation from the bar maid has well as the owner. The food came out just right. This is one of the few places where the owner will sit down and ask you how the food and service was and if they could do any thing better to please the customer. We have eaten here on much slower nights with the same quality of service. To get that same service with a touch of family feeling was priceless
